Case study
Data governance that leadership could finally see.
A major Australian superannuation and investment company
Financial ServicesStrategy & ArchitectureRisk, Resilience & Assurance
The challenge
One of Australia's largest pension payers faced a widening gap between its data governance and its obligations: a growing set of Australian and US regulatory demands, contractual data and intellectual property that needed stronger protection, and a leadership team yet to be convinced that centralised data governance was worth funding. Governance existed on paper; what was missing was a program the business could see working.
What we did
We assessed the existing procedures and the business value chain to define what governance actually needed to cover, then built the working parts: a comprehensive operating model with tailored policies and standards, hands-on guidance for the teams applying them, and a scalable program design with clear solution options. A cost-effective data-governance technology platform was then implemented to carry the program — meeting evolving compliance and privacy requirements without adding operational drag.
The outcome
The company now runs a data governance program designed to grow with the business: critical contractual data and IP under strengthened protection, obligations met by mechanisms rather than documents, and — the piece that had been missing — a governance model whose value leadership can see and stand behind. The practices were established without the cost blowout the organisation had feared.
