Environmental Policy
Reviewed every two years
1. About this policy
This Environmental Policy formalises our commitment to supporting the principles of environmental sustainability and recognises that a sustainable environment is central to our lives and our work. Kode-1 Pty Ltd is committed to managing its activities to promote environmental sustainability, conserve and enhance our natural resources, prevent environmental pollution, and bring about continual improvement in our environmental performance.
The aim of this policy is to integrate a philosophy of environmental sustainability into all of the organisation’s activities and to establish and promote sound environmental practice in our operations — by informing staff and stakeholders of our commitment, supporting the implementation of environmental actions, monitoring their progress, and communicating their outcomes to relevant stakeholders.
2. Responsibility
This policy is owned by Kode-1 Pty Ltd and reviewed every two years; changes may be made at any time based on guidance or amended organisational priorities. Line managers have day-to-day responsibility for this policy. Suggestions for changes or additions are welcome and should be directed to the Director (partner@kode-1.com).
3. Who this policy applies to
This policy covers all employees, officers, directors, consultants, contractors, volunteers, interns, casual workers, and agency workers. It does not form part of any contract of employment or other contract to provide services, and we may amend it at any time.
4. Environmental sustainability statement
Kode-1 respects our relationship with the natural environment and its ecosystems. We acknowledge the adverse impacts that human activity can impose, the specific impacts of our business on the natural environment, and our responsibility as a good corporate citizen. We commit to:
- monitoring and managing our environmental performance and working towards targets set to reduce adverse impacts;
- complying with all relevant international, national, state, and local environmental policy, regulations, legislation, and industry best practice;
- reducing the consumption of natural resources in daily operations, including water, paper, and energy;
- maximising the recycling of resources and disposing of all waste appropriately;
- preventing pollution and continually improving our environmental management;
- limiting carbon emissions from vehicle and air travel;
- communicating this policy to employees, contractors, and stakeholders, and making it publicly available;
- reporting on environmental performance in internal and external communications where relevant; and
- reviewing this policy every two years, measuring targets and performance as part of that review.
5. The natural environment and our assets
We commit to increasing opportunities for nature to thrive on the assets we own, lease, or manage, and to supporting biodiversity: protecting and enhancing the natural environment on our assets, supporting the conservation of trees and habitats, introducing environmental growth opportunities wherever we can, reducing materials and activities with detrimental environmental impact, phasing out chemicals and pesticides, and using water efficiently — with staff aware of how to reduce and reuse it.
6. Sustainable travel
We promote modern working practices including remote and hybrid working, encourage digital meetings wherever possible, and encourage staff to take public transport, cycle, or walk. We support the use of electric and other ultra-low-emissions vehicles, and actively work to reduce air travel — offsetting emissions where a recognised business need for air travel exists.
7. Waste and recycling
We commit to keeping waste to an absolute minimum by preventing, reusing, recycling, or recovering waste wherever possible, and aspire to be a zero-waste organisation: phasing out single-use plastics, recycling all recyclable material, using recyclable and compostable products, minimising printing and paper waste, using electronic communication as our primary method, preventing pollution of all kinds, and promoting composting of organic waste.
8. Sustainable procurement
We commit to timely procurement that enables less environmentally damaging choices — preferring overland and sea freight to aviation, and monitoring and offsetting emissions where air freight is unavoidable. We source materials and services locally and seasonally where possible, prefer organic, local, and fair-trade catering, ensure timber and wood-based materials come from sustainable sources, use eco-friendly consumables, and review procurement spending against the principles of environmental sustainability.
9. Our duty to the wider world
Greenhouse gas emissions are a key contributor to rapid climate change, and energy use is one of the clearest ways we can reduce our overall emissions. We will undertake an energy audit, produce plans to reduce our energy usage and switch to renewable energy procurement, and investigate the use of wind and solar energy on our assets. We will review and produce plans to reduce and offset our Scope 1 emissions (sources we control directly), Scope 2 emissions (purchased electricity), and Scope 3 emissions (travel and purchased goods).
10. Information technology and sustainability
We work towards certified sustainable PCs, laptops, monitors, mobile devices, and network and server hardware, sourcing recycled equipment where possible and using low-efficiency equipment only where there is no alternative. All equipment is disposed of through an approved e-waste recycling contractor — no IT equipment is sent to landfill. We provide applications and systems that reduce the need for printing.
11. Training and staff involvement
We encourage all staff to undergo training on environmental sustainability and climate change, and to collaborate in our sustainability efforts — staff involvement is critical to the adoption of this policy. A sustainability steering group drives involvement and stewardship of sustainability across the organisation.
